Just as an FYI, Debian and Ubuntu provide helper scripts for managing modules and sites under apache. The "a2enmod" and "a2dismod" commands will enable and disable modules.

So you could have done: a2enmod rewrite

If there had been a separate heades.conf file, this would have symlinked that as well.

Thanks Martyn. Just to mention the correction from Twitter it was Linux Format Issue 114 ( I thought I was going mad for a minute).

Interesting that they felt it was ' a niche within a niche within a niche' and not worth covering. I would strongly disagree with the fact that it is not worth covering. Accounting Software is a niche because so many people are not aware of the excellent solutions that are out there and if magazines like Linux Format are not going to cover accounting software then this will not help.

Interestingly in the same issue they do a round up of personal finance/micro business accounts software.

Actually - take a look at the letters section in Linux Format issue 111 (page 17). There is a specific request for a review.

I contacted the editor today to offer my services :-D

I don't believe FOSS use in small business should be niche - and in fact I would say that awareness is growing. Certainly the current economic conditions will mean businesses look closer at their IT costs.

Regarding Accounting/ERP. Until there is a suite that addresses the UK specifically then I think you are correct - uptake will be slow.

But, as you know Iam to change that .....

Nice post. Sets things out in an orderly fashion and makes the case for OOo compelling.

Microsoft must be starting to get a little worried as Office is still their cash cow hence the Software AND service initiative.

Last week I was in Curry's looking at the eeePC and someone came over to me asking if I knew anything about them. The one real concern they had was if it could open .docx and pdf files. Now that day has come!

Phil,

Installed OOo 3.0 today. No problems so far. the PTs in my excel 2000 files still look naff in datapilot - but at least they are translated now.

Roll on a browser based version of the PT.

Hi Martyn

Yes I think that hardcore Excel users will struggle to convert. Macros is another example as Excel Macros are not supported by OOo.

I understand these people staying with Excel but would encourage that where ever they can, from SP2, they save in OpenDocument Format. Now the question is if you create a speadsheet with pivot tables in Excel and save as .ods will it support the pivot table?

Phil

I like OOo and we are moving away from MS to open source including OOo. But... excel is still the daddy, especially at Pivot tables - datapilot just doesn't cut it

See here for a discussion on the subject

Thanks Martyn

Yes, it seems crazy that we are not using open source software more in education from nursery right though to university. Open source software actually allows students to learn from the code and use it many different ways that proprietary software does not allow. Proprietary software actively discourages learning.

It should not require a change of government to have a better policy on open source any government should be able to see the benefits.

Phil,

Interesting. You ought to look at govt agencies as well.

I was at the IT steering committee meeting of my local FE college. In attendance was the IT manager for the local council. When I asked him about the use of OS software he said that Microsoft was mandated by the LGA - i.e. local authorities had to use it.

Also the senior lecturer on the app development degree said they couldn't effectively teach Linux or the use of OS tools as part of the course because the IT support group at the college would only support Microsoft applications and servers. They therefore couldn't get any budget approval to install any OS software or servers for teaching.

I was gobsmacked.
